Affordable housing options coming to Moorabool

Moorabool’s housing market will soon grow thanks to a $9.5 million grants commitment from the state government’s Social Housing Growth Fund.

As part of $219 million of grants announced recently through the fund, the Moorabool commitment will deliver about 26 new social and affordable houses in Moorabool.

Responding to the increasing population in Moorabool, the grant will provide funding to community housing agencies, such as BlueCHPV Limited and Women’s Housing Limited.

Melton MP Steve McGhie said the grants aim to meet the increasing demand for social and affordable housing in Melton.

“We’re getting on with the job and delivering new homes right across the state and the Melton electorate,” he said.

The funding will complement the Regional Affordable Housing Summit in Creswick, which was held on Tuesday, October 4.

The event involved government ministers and representatives from regional councils and community and business sectors to discuss ways to collaborate to address ongoing housing supply and affordability struggles across regional Victoria.

Housing Minister Danny Pearson said the funding program aims to build more housing where people wanted to live.

“We’re delivering more homes for Victorians across the regions and creating thousands of jobs,” he said.

“We’re delivering the biggest single investment in social housing Victoria has ever seen – we’re not just investing in bricks and mortar, but the lives of Victorians right across the state for years to come.”

Seven of the state-wide projects will include new homes for Aboriginal Victorians.

In addition to the Social Housing Growth Fund, Homes for Aboriginal Victorians grants rounds will deliver self-determined and culturally safe housing for Aboriginal people across the state.

The funding is part of the state government’s $5.3 billion Big Housing Build, which is the biggest ever investment in social housing by any state or territory, with $1.25 billion dedicated to regional Victoria.

Projects will commence throughout 2023 as planning and other approvals are obtained.
