Aspiring pastry chefs have the chance to try their hand at the profession through a community short course.
Melton South Community Centre is bringing back its six-week pastry making course next month but spaces are limited to six people, for social distancing and sanitation purposes.
Course facilitator Sally Davies, a qualified pastry chef, will take students through the basics.
“The course will introduce students to pastry and baking techniques starting with bread making, tarts, choux pastry and moving into desserts,” Ms Davies said.
“We often get people who want to try a career in pastry cheffing and others who would like to improve their baking for their families.”
Ms Davies has been a pastry chef for the past decade and also runs her own cake-making business.
“I come from quite a diverse background, I first worked in IT and was a health worker before I trained in France to become a patissier,” she said.
Community centre manager Pam Madej said the short courses were funded under the Australian Centre of Further Education and are open to the public under the COVID-19 restrictions.
“This is an opportunity for anyone interested in improving their baking skills,” Ms Madej said.
“A lot of people are very interested in baking for their families at the moment while they are home so the course would be a great way to learn something new.”
Two course will run between May 13 and June 17 or May 16 to June 20 from 12.30-3pm at the Melton South Community Centre.
