Parents will be learning alongside their children at an upcoming forum about relationship building.

Students at Brookside P- 9 College have been participating in the Respectful Relationships initiative which focuses on resilience and learning what their rights are.

The community, parents and caregivers have been invited to a forum at the school on May 28 which will look at the impact the program is having from participants as well as professionals.

Principal Simon Sherlock said the initiative matches the school’s values which include respect, support, teamwork and achievement.

“We didn’t need convincing that this was the right work for us,” Mr Sherlock said.

“We have become a lead school in our area since implementing the Respectful Relationships program in August last year. The program is now being implemented in its entirety as a whole school approach.”

He said that the program’s main aim was to prepare young people to face challenges by developing problem-solving skills and building empathy, resilience and confidence.

“The response from both our teachers and students has been overwhelmingly positive,” Mr Sherlock said.

“We are starting to use a common language and students are becoming aware of who they are and how to interact with others in a respectful way.”

The free forum at Brookside P-9 College runs from 6-7.30pm.
