Melton Thoroughbreds breaks the ice

Melton Thoroughbreds finally broke through for their first win of the Big V men’s division 2 season.

Winless after the first four rounds, the Thoroughbreds’ luck turned on Saturday night against Pakenham Warriors.

It was an even start for the two teams, before the Thoroughbreds broke the game open in the middle two quarters.

The Thoroughbreds outscored the Warriors, 31-10 in the second quarter and then 24-15 in the third to open up a 27-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The Thoroughbreds held their nerve, going goal for goal in the final quarter to seal the 105-79 point win.

Emmanuel Malou was the standout with 37 points, as he shot 13 from 17 from the field, including four from five beyond the arc.

Only one Thoroughbreds player didn’t hit the scoreboard. The Thoroughbreds sit 11th after five rounds ahead of a clash with Wallan Panthers this weekend.

The women’s side had a tough night, losing to Melbourne Black Angels in the division 2 competition.

All four quarters were close, but the Angels managed to outscore the Thoroughbreds in each quarter to extend the lead throughout the game. The final score was 66-57.

Captain Jenna Conroy top-scored with 16 points, while also pulling down 12 rebounds.

The Thoroughbreds sit seventh, with two wins and two losses from the opening five rounds. This week they face ladder leaders Wallan Panthers.

The youth league men’s side, which is coming off a two-point loss against Pakenham Warriors, also face the Panthers this week.
