The Sunbury and Diggers Rest communities have thrown their support behind fundraisers for the children of a Diggers Rest woman who was killed earlier this month.
Money, food and services have been offered to two fundraisers set up by friends of 29-year-old Katherine ‘Katie’ Haley, who was found dead by emergency services at a Fairfield Crescent property about 11pm on March 9.
A 28-year-old Diggers Rest man has since been charged with her murder.
Within just two days last week, 143 people had donated $10,020 to an online fund called Katie Haley’s Legacy, set up for Ms Haley’s two children.
The fund’s blurb describes Ms Haley as “a beautiful and loving mother” of a six-year-old and a 10-month-old.
“We are setting up this fundraiser in order to give the children the fresh start they so desperately deserve,” it reads. “The ultimate goal is to give these two children the best possible future and financial support so they can fulfil the life Katie was working so hard to provide them with.
“These two beautiful children will be the living memory of beautiful Katie girl, and all the love and support these children will grow up with as a result of her compassionate and selfless personality.”
A friend of Ms Haley has also organised The Haley Children Fundraiser, to be held at Sunbury Heights Primary School on Saturday, May 26 to raise money for the children’s future.
Local businesses and community members have made offers of donations for the event.
Ms Haley was a pupil at Sunbury Heights Primary School.
Principal Kaye Mills said the school was supporting the event, but was also going to do something different as a school community to support the children and remember Ms Haley.
