Melton takes state title

Melton Secondary College students dominated the field and came home state rugby league champions.

The school’s girls rugby nines team claimed the state title and the Robbie Kearns Shield at the recent Victorian Secondary Schools competition at Fairfield after a final against Gladstone Park Secondary College.

Sports co-ordinator Gerard Darcy said the girls’ team faced some fierce competition but continued their winning ways.

“We won the state championship in dramatic fashion with a golden point extra time with a situation that had to be seen to be understood,” Mr Darcy said. “The game was tied at 2-2 and we won on a scoring rule.

“This title adds to the impressive record of State Champions in 2015 and runners-up last year.

“It was a great effort by the girls who improved dramatically during the day.”

The junior boys team was pipped at the post in the final against Mt Ridley College.

“A terrific effort by the boys to finish state runner-up in a very high standard competition,” Mr Darcy said. “The Storm officials were really impressed by our boys and the standard and conduct of the team.”

Mr Darcy said that he hoped this year’s success would mean “promising times ahead”.
