Carols by Candlelight in Melton has been cancelled.

The council cancelled the event – due to take place on Saturday, December 2 at Hannah Watts Park – after forecasts of severe thunderstorms for most of Victoria at the weekend.

The decision was made following consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology and emergency services.

Another event, Live @ The Horse, Christmas Family Fun, to be held in the Melton town centre on Saturday afternoon, has also been postponed.

Melton council corporate services general manager Peter Bean said it was a difficult decision to cancel the popular Carols by Candlelight.

“While it’s incredibly disappointing, the safety of our residents remains our priority,” he said.

“We sought advice from the Bureau of Meteorology, and emergency services, who advised the weather would not be suitable for the outdoor event to be held safely.

“Council explored many options to relocate the Carols by Candlelight event indoors, but did not find a suitable space to hold the 5000 people expected to join us this year.

“We understand that many of you were looking forward to this much-loved event, and we appreciate your understanding.”

The council is in the process of organising another community event for Christmas.

Residents are advised to keep an eye on the council’s social media channels and website for details.

The council urged the community to stay safe this weekend, take care on the roads and to never drive through flood waters.
