Diggers Rest tumble as Roos fight for finals

Diggers Rest’s unbeaten run in the Riddell District Football League season has ended at the hands of Sunbury Kangaroos.

With top spot already secured, the Burras didn’t have much to play for in the final round of the season, while the Kangaroos needed a win for any chance of playing finals.

The Kangaroos led at every break in their 10.7 (67)-7.9 (51) win but missed finals on percentage.

Matthew Krul was the only multiple goalscorer for the Burras with two. Stuart Clarke, John Ryan and Michael Evans were named in the best.

The Burras will face Macedon in a qualifying final on Saturday at Boardman Reserve.

Melton Centrals’ season came to an end against Broadford on Saturday after a horror start to the game.

Broadford led 40-0 before Centrals got going. Despite out-scoring the Kangaroos in the second and fourth quarters, they lost 13.10 (88)-6.9 (45).

Michael Egan kicked four goals for Centrals and was named their best in the loss.

A tough season for Rockbank came to an end as it faced a rampaging Wallan.

With the Magpies needing a massive percentage boost to make the finals, the Rams were bombarded from the opening siren.

The Magpies kicked 49.28 (322) to the Rams’ 4.8 (32).

The score proved to be enough for the Magpies, whose percentage jumped nearly 25 per cent as they secured the sixth and last finals spot. For the Rams, Jake Warwick kicked two goals. Harley Cameron was named their best.

Centrals finished the season 11th with two wins and the Rams finished the season 12th without a win.
