Melton Thoroughbreds’ title defence in Big V division 1 has come to an end after a preliminary final loss to Warrnambool on Saturday night.

The Seahawks won through to the grand final with their 79-73 win.

Having made the trip up the highway, the Thoroughbreds were slow out of the blocks and trailed by eight points at quarter-time.

The slow start proved to be the difference between the sides which went goal for goal in the second and last quarters, with the Breds winning the third term by just two points.

Nathan Sobey, red hot favourite for the division’s most valuable player award, was a standout for the Seahawks, scoring 34 points and being well supported by Xavier Blount (25 points).

For the Thoroughbreds, Billy Feben top-scored with 15 points, while Ivan Harris (11), Shane Moroney (10) and Cameron McCallum (14 points and nine rebounds) also hit double figures.

In the grand final, the Seahawks play Casey after the latter upset Blackburn, which hadn’t lost since round one.
