Melton Model Aircraft Club reel from theft

Melton Model Aircraft Club members are reeling after thieves stole equipment from their clubrooms in the latest of a string of attacks.

Dozens of items valued at more than $600 and including shovels, crowbars, pickaxes and biscuits, were stolen when two thieves broke into the Mt Cottrell Recreation Reserve shed on Saturday, June 25.

The club’s president, David Axon, said members were disappointed and frustrated by the theft.

“They’re probably afraid of going back and seeing it broken into again,” he said.

“We’re just really annoyed.”

Mr Axon said the club’s medical cabinet, which was bolted to the wall, was also stolen.

He said that while there hadn’t been any significant damage to the clubrooms, members were considering ramping up security and would no longer be leaving anything in the rooms.

Mr Axon said the club had been broken into several times in the past year.

“Bunnings [Melton] said they’re going to help us with the replacement of the things they have, such as the tools,” he said.

“That’s a very generous offer. Hopefully nobody goes and pinches anything again.”

Melton police Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks said police were investigating the theft and appealed to the public for information.

“Clubrooms are an opportunity for [the thieves] because it’s remote,” he said.

“It’s highly likely they thought about the break in, thinking they’ll be able to steal a fair bit of stuff.”

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
