Altona North’s Second Avenue shopping strip is set to have its speed reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h after a $530,000 upgrade.
Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Tony Briffa said works, expected to start in late January, would include footpath and road widening and new pram ramps.
“The Second Avenue shopping strip is such a hub of activity for our residents in the area, and we know plenty of people walk there from their nearby homes,” Cr Briffa said.
“Traffic flow for vehicles will also be improved after we extend the kerb opposite the shops to allow for a wider roadway.”
The road and carpark will be resurfaced between Cresser and Marion streets, after which the speed limit for vehicles on Second Avenue will reduce to 40km/h.
Most works are expected to be completed by Easter.
Councillor Sandra Wilson said a social gathering space with seating and landscaping would also be created.
“Council engaged shoppers, traders and local residents and they gave us valuable feedback that we have incorporated into the project scope and design,” she said.
“These works will breathe new life into this valuable community area and we are looking forward to our community enjoying the Second Avenue shops even more.”
