Saints in rare danger

Undefeated for the first eight matches of the season, St Anthonys is on the brink of losing back-to-back matches in the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s B-grade.

Taking on East Sunbury, St Anthonys was skittled for just 120.

East’s Matthew Jackson and Gary Williams were the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets each, while Jake Doyle chipped in with two.

In reply, East Sunbury recovered from the loss of an early wicket to move to a strong position: 1-54 after 17 overs, with Shannon McDorman (27) and Matthew Jackson (26) set to resume.

East Sunbury needs a further 67 runs, with nine wickets in hand. If it achieves victory, it will be one of the biggest upsets of the GDCA season.

St Anthonys is on top of the B-grade ladder, nine points clear of its nearest rival. East Sunbury is in last place with just two wins.

In A-grade matches, Diggers Rest Bulla is on top after day one of its clash against Woodend.

Diggers Rest made 149, thanks to a fighting half century from first drop Kevin Barker. Coming in with the score at 1-9, Barker hit two fours and three sixes in his 58, being well supported by Rhys Berry with 20.

While the target may have looked thin on paper, it proved to be anything but thanks to a fired-up Diggers Rest attack.

Opening bowler Darren Quarrell ripped through the top order, taking three wickets, while Berry claimed one.

At stumps Woodend is 4-28.
