A NEW business centre in Toolern is expected to generate more local jobs and, in turn, take pressure off roads.
Federal Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor last week announced that the $21 million Western Business Accelerator and Centre for Excellence would focus on construction jobs. He said about a third of all new businesses in Melton were connected to the building industry.
Melton mayor Justin Mammarella said the centre would link training, support and research to deliver local employment opportunities, reducing the need for residents to commute.
WISE Employment Melton business manager Richard Verhagen said the centre would help ensure there was sufficient infrastructure to support businesses in the area.
“As Melton’s population increases, the need to create more local jobs will also increase,” Mr Verhagen said.
“Lack of transport is one of the most common barriers faced by our job seekers and many have to rely on public transport to get to and from work.”
Sustainability Minister Tony Burke said 83 per cent of Melton’s workforce was forced to leave the area for work.
Mr Burke said the centre would lead to the creation of local jobs, taking cars off the road and allowing Melton residents to spend more time with family and friends.
Scheduled to open in 2015, the $21 million centre will provide training for construction businesses, including those involved in environmentally sustainable building and design. Small business owners from other industries will be able to access training in business management, planning and marketing.
Kangan Institute and Ballarat and Victoria universities will provide research and training support.
