DIGGERS Rest will live to fight another day after avoiding a straight sets exit from Riddell District Football League finals and eliminating Riddell by 15 points at the weekend.
The Burras were hit hard by Riddell early but overturned a 23-point quarter-time deficit to win 15.4 (94) to 11.13 (79) at Riddells Creek Reserve.
Jack Sheahan’s bag of five goals led the scoring as the Diggers Rest midfield responded to the slow start where coach Jamie Elliott said Riddell’s on-ballers dominated.
But there was no quarter-time spray in the huddle for the Burras in spite of the 1.0 to 4.5 scoreline.
“It was more about what we had to do to turn it around, our on-ballers never touched it,” Elliott said.
“Riddell ran hard, once we got our hands on the ball things started turning around.
“We took our chances when we got the ball into the forward line quickly. Jack was an important part of that.”
A stint in the ruck for key player Brent Tuckey contributed to his being named as the Burras’ best.
“To beat Riddell is a really good performance, they’re well coached and our boys stood up when the time came.”
Jarrod Silvester kicked four goals for the Bombers while Rhys Lowry, Matt Sammut and Xavier Codd were better players for the Bombers.
