ROADS were flooded and a nine-megalitre dam almost burst its banks after 18 millimetres of rain fell in Melton over the weekend.
Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Darrin McKenzie said it, the CFA and SES were called to assist after pressure began to build on the banks of a dam at a Rockbank farm about 4pm Sunday. Water was pumped out and an excavator brought in amid fears the dam could burst and send water onto nearby Melton Highway.
“DSE and other services monitored the situation overnight. The heavy rainfall in the last week contributed to the catchment becoming saturated. We will have a controlled release over the next 24 hours to bring levels of water of the dam to a safe level.”
Melton’s Acting Sergeant Jamie Love yesterday said the threat
to Melton Highway would be monitored.
