Buninyong puts rivalry aside to help Elaine

BUNINYONG Cricket Club has bowled over its rival Elaine with a donation of equipment to the resurrected club.

The Weekly reported in June that

the Elaine club had been in recession for 12 years.

But following the success of a junior Milo In2Cricket program last year, the town is again looking to field its own junior and senior teams.

Cricket Australia has said it will use Elaine’s unique story in promoting grassroots cricket during Channel Nine and Foxtel telecasts this summer.

Two years ago, tennis also made a comeback in Elaine after a 10-year hiatus.

Buninyong treasurer Chris Gordon said the cricket club decided to donate the equipment to help out a neighbouring town. Both teams will contest the lower grades of the Ballarat Cricket Association this summer.

“We are interested in keeping cricket in the region growing,” Gordon said.

He said it was pleasing to see a former rival re-form. “We are really looking forward to playing against Elaine again after 12 years.”

Elaine secretary Shane Dunne said the town appreciated Buninyong’s gesture. Cricket Victoria also donated gear to the club after a junior clinic in early August.
