Taggers given the brush-off

A GROUP of Melton residents is celebrating the success of a graffiti removal effort launched in a bid to lift community spirit.

John Southall, Peter Rowan and John Goodman said the Melton Residents Association was spurred to take action after getting sick of seeing “horrible” graffiti around the shire.

After taking it upon themselves to rid the streets of spraypaint 10 months ago, they say they’ve been pleased with the results.

“In Scott Street for instance, since we’ve cleaned it up there has been no more graffiti,” Mr Southall says.

“We decided to take it into our own hands and it is going very well.”

Mr Southall says the initiative has attracted a great response from young people in the area.

“We’ve had a group of young kids help us clean up the graffiti.”

The group received $1000 through Melton Council’s community funding program to help its effort. Council officers also provided training, vouchers, chemicals, safety goggles, gloves and other equipment.

Acting planning manager Francesca Carlton said the council also provided graffiti removal kits to residents upon request.

Melton Residents Association is inviting residents to a free sausage sizzle celebration at the Scott Street park this Saturday at 10am.
