MOORABOOL Council wants to create a stronger walking and cycling culture after receiving $10,000 in state government funding to deliver a ‘hike and bike’ strategy.
The strategy is likely to incorporate restoration works after walking trails along the Lerderderg and Werribee rivers were washed away in last year’s floods.
The strategy is due to be completed by November.
The strategy is timely after recent figures provided by
council revealed the number of overweight men and women in Moorabool is above the national, state and country Victoria average.
Moorabool chief executive Rob Croxford said council wanted enthusiastic cyclists like Kirsty Reid (pictured) and walkers to join a project group to oversee the strategy. “The hike and bike strategy will link and prioritise all tracks, trails and paths in the shire and their connections across municipal boundaries.
“We really need input from all over the shire to develop a
deliverable path network accessible for all our residents and visitors.”
Bacchus Marsh district trails advisory committee member and keen cyclist Greg Ley welcomed the move.
“Moorabool has limited infrastructure for cycling and walking with missing footpaths, just a few poor cycle lanes and limited recreational paths,” he said.
“I would like safe and convenient walking and cycling infrastructure for all residents and visitors.”
