Melton and Moorabool residents are being encouraged to get crafty and help stamp out measles by joining a commitment to eradicate disease in the Third World.
Bacchus Marsh’s Jennie Fraine taught in a rural girls’ boarding school in Zambia in the late 1970s. She saw how children die from preventable diseases such as measles.
While Ms Fraine stopped teaching in the 1980s, she’s never forgotten the lessons learned during her time in Africa.
“When I realised this was still happening around the world, not only in Zambia in the past, I decided to do something about it,” she says.
“If we can stamp out smallpox, surely we can do the same with measles. It costs only $1 to vaccinate a child and there are hundreds of thousands needing that protection in Asia, Africa and many other countries around the world.”
A financial controller with a global training and development company, Ms Fraine’s goal is to make lino-printed cards to sell. She will donate all money raised to the Measles and Rubella Initiative.
Anyone wanting to learn a new skill, or practice a familiar one, can go to the art shed behind Bacchus Marsh Baptist Church this Saturday from 10am-4pm.
Ms Fraine is also planning a musical fund-raising event in September which will feature a two-hour workshop in African drumming and a performance.
