MOORABOOL’S tourism figures are through the roof.

The shire has had the highest percentage of growth in tourism across the region – up 40% on 2011, and 63% since 2008 – according to Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Regional Tourism stats.

The number of people visiting the Visitor Information Centre has also increased by an average of 17 per cent over the past three years.

By comparison, Hume (14.8 per cent), Hepburn (13.7 per cent) and Macedon (seven per cent) have made much smaller increases.

Moorabool Shire Council Mayor Cr Pat Griffin said there were a number of factors that contributed to the outstanding figures, including the 365 Days in Moorabool Shire campaign.

“Council has been very proactive in promoting the region to visitors, using activities such as the Feast of March promotion, and spreading the good word about the myriad unique attractions we offer,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s also a reflection of the terrific work by local tourism authorities, businesses, accommodation providers and the people of Moorabool Shire who are so welcoming of visitors.

“The recent Regional and Rural Expo in Melbourne gave us a valuable insight into how our fresh lifestyle is so attractive to people in Melbourne.

Our strong message was that we’re less than an hour away for most Melbournians – perfect for a day or weekend trip.

‘‘We got to talk to people face-to-face, and the reaction was very positive. I think this bodes well for further growth.”
