WORKERS will begin laying fibre-optic cables in Melton within months, Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced.
The Lalor MP said about 2600 Melton premises would be plugged into the high-speed National Broadband Network over one year.
She said Melton would join 1500 communities Australia-wide set to have access to the $35.9billion NBN as part of the first three years of a decade-long rollout.
In Victoria, work has already started in Bacchus Marsh, Brunswick and South Morang.
Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor said the NBN was “exciting news” for families and businesses.
“From seeing your doctor in your own home, to your kids being able to access a specialist class in another school, people in Melton will be among the first to benefit,” he said.
A standard NBN connection to a home or office is free, while other services will cost upwards of $30 a month.
