Police probe: Bacchus Marsh traffic cameras ‘stolen’

POLICE in Bacchus Marsh are investigating the bizarre theft of $20,000 worth of traffic cameras.

Thieves last week stole 10 different traffic cameras, currently being used to conduct a feasibility study into the long-debated Woolpack Road extension.

Detectives say they believe those responsible for the theft are people opposed to any possible change to Bacchus Marsh’s Avenue of Honour.

The cameras were removed from eight different locations across the town, with secure padlocks and cables tampered with in order to gain access to them.

Detective Senior Constable Lee Tabbitt of Moorabool’s crime investigation unit said: ‘‘We suspect it’s locals and people who aren’t all that keen on everything that is happening right now with the roadworks.”

Detective Senior Constable Tabbitt said the cameras were privately owned by company AECOM, who have been contracted by VicRoads to conduct the study.

It is not known how many people were involved in the thefts.

Anyone with information or who has witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the early hours of Wednesday, June 26 is urged to contact Moorabool CIU on 5366 4545 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
