MELTON Centrals coach Brian Wheelahan was left disappointed with his side’s performance as it was thrashed by Sunbury Kangaroos in the Riddell District Football League on Saturday.
In perfect conditions, the Centrals didn’t come to play, scoring only four goals for the match.
The final score told the sorry story: 23.17 (155) to 2.4 (16).
Wheelahan said it was the worst loss he had been involved in at the club.
“There was a lack of effort from players and they will have to live with that for two weeks; we have the bye this week.
“They played as individuals and did their own thing rather than gelling as a team.
“We spoke about it at length after the game, about playing selfless, not individual, football.
“They have to bottle the embarrassment and hopefully use that in two weeks’ time.”
Wheelahan said the result was particularly disappointing as the Centrals had been playing well.
“The month leading up to the match had been really good. But on Saturday we went away from what we’ve been doing.”
He said the Kangaroos’ midfield dominated.
“We weren’t winning enough of the footy. They were leading us to the contest and we were playing reactive football. Our tackling was great, but you could say that was because they were getting the ball.”
Wheelahan said Matt Martin and Christopher Kellett were the only two players to ‘win’ their positions.
“Matt was good down back and worked tirelessly. Chris stood up in the second half in the midfield and made a go of it.”
Wheelahan said that despite the week off, the Centrals wouldn’t let up on the track.
“We’ve got two sessions planned this week and two for next week and we might run a weekend session to keep morale up.”
