Taskforce set up to curb vandalism

MORE than 50 cars have had their windscreens smashed and panels damaged in a spate of attacks in the north-west suburbs in the past fortnight.

Police said vandals struck in Hillside, Caroline Springs, Taylors Hill and Sydenham last Wednesday night and on June 24.

Caroline Springs’ Acting Sergeant Matthew Golding said a police taskforce

would investigate, and he urged residents to report incidents immediately.

“It can be extremely difficult to locate offenders when hours have passed and we have very limited information,” he said.

“Responding to it quickly would help the taskforce to be at the scene immediately.”

Sergeant Paul Allen said none of the attacks was in the same street, leading police to believe there may have been more than one offender.

He said more than 50 cars had their windscreens shattered, and, in some cases, metal panels had been dented or scratched.

Brimbank resident Emily (surname withheld) said she woke on June 24 to find the windscreen of her car, parked in Holland Way, smashed.

“I’ve been staying at my boyfriend’s house in Caroline Springs for three years and nothing like this has ever happened before,” she said.

“We have spoken to neighbours and it seems that cars parked closer to homes weren’t touched, while ones parked on the street were targeted.”

Her boyfriend’s car, which was parked metres away in the driveway, was untouched.

She said she had spoken to a resident who lived around the corner in Lawson Way, who had their car windscreen shattered and every panel on the car destroyed.
