MELTON Thoroughbreds have tightened their grip on second place after two wins in the Big V division two at the weekend.
In the first game, they travelled down the road to take on local rival Keilor Thunder, who are fifth on the ladder.
It was the Thoroughbreds who came out firing, bringing their shooting game to win 84-74, despite 10 fewer field goal attempts.
Shooting at a high 57 per cent from the field in the first term, the Thoroughbreds were able to take an 11-point lead at the first break.
Defying expectations, they increased their rate to 78 per cent in the second term, then never surrendered the lead.
Jeff Crowe scored 23 points and Jordan Kirk 18.
On Sunday the Thoroughbreds were again quickly out of the blocks, defeating the Maccabi Warriors 68-62.
A 20-8 first term was enough to give the Thoroughbreds a lead they never relinquished.
With two games in as many days, coach Aaron Christian used his bench more than usual with every player on court for at least 10 minutes.
All players got on the scoreboard.
Matt Strutynski (10 points and 15 rebounds) and Peter Leppik (7 points and 11 rebounds) were good under the boards and ensured the Thoroughbreds dominated the inside game.
This week they face Mornington on Saturday night.
