Big V: Melton Thoroughbreds take time to hit their stride

MELTON Thoroughbreds overcame a slow start to win easily against the Western Port Steelers in the Big V division2.

After a sluggish first quarter, the Thoroughbreds kicked into gear to win 84-43.

The Steelers started well, shooting at better than 40per cent in the first quarter.

The Thoroughbreds kept up consistent defensive pressure, but still the Steelers took an eight-point lead into the first break.

The Thoroughbreds continued to pressure the Steelers in the second quarter and turned the tables, scoring 26-5 and grabbing a 13-point lead. In the second half, the Thoroughbreds’ guards Jason Christian (10 points) and Jeff Crowe (nine assists) took control of the game and the lead increased.

The gap afforded the Thoroughbreds the luxury of using their bench.

Matt Parker and Timothy Brown came into the game, scoring 10 and six points respectively. But Martin Pietrykowski was the star, shooting 22 points and taking 20 rebounds

The win takes the Thoroughbreds to second on the ladder. This week they have a double header, away to local rival Keilor Thunder on Saturday night, then home to the Maccabi Warriors on Sunday.
