VOLUNTEERS have been devastated by repeated attacks on a Melton opportunity shop.
Uniting Church op shop manager Jenni Lethbridge said the store had been forced to spend more than $5000 on a security system and closed-circuit TV cameras.
She said valuable resources were being wasted and taken away from the community because of “reckless and selfish people”.
“In the past six months [vandals have] been destroying the place piece by piece.”
Ms Lethbridge said footage of one incident showed someone had climbed over a fence, knocked a camera off angle and covered it with a plastic bag.
Offenders have destroyed trailers and trolleys, ripped open bags, vandalised other equipment and broken into a new shed, taking goods meant for sale.
“We often come to work and someone has got into the drop bins and ruined donated goods,” Ms Lethbridge said. “It’s a real nuisance. The community is missing out.”
