ODOUR emanating from wool processing waste dumped in Melton West last month is still generating complaints.
Melton Football Club secretary Bruce Clark said although the site where the odour was coming from, on Porteus and Harkess roads, was not within eyesight, the smell often reached the club’s grounds.
He said it was a major nuisance, especially when the canteen was operating.
“It does stink and it’s something people have mentioned … those from out of town, like Ballarat and Sunbury, have remarked on the smell,” he said.
The waste was dumped in Melton West when Moorabool Council gave Victorian Wool Processors 21 days to remove it from a site in Longforest Road in Bacchus Marsh.
Clark said he could not understand how the waste found its way to Melton Shire. “Why move it from one shire to another? If it wasn’t good enough for Bacchus Marsh, why should we have it?” Clark said.
Melton Council’s compliance manager, Ian Stewart, said an analysis by a National Association of Testing Authorities certified laboratory confirmed the waste was non-toxic.
“The material placed on farmland within Melton Shire is an industrial byproduct being utilised as a fertiliser/soil conditioner for agricultural purposes,” Mr Stewart said.
“Of the quantity placed on the property, about 60 per cent has been spread on the surface and is being turned into the soil by plough. Council understands the material will have been fully spread and turned into the soil ready for cropping within one or two weeks.”
