Melton Council will mark National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3) by unveiling a plaque at Melton Golf Club’s ‘sacred tree’.
The week commemorates the anniversaries of the successful 1967 referendum giving Aborigines the right to vote and the High Court’s Mabo native title decision.
Mayor Justin Mammarella said it was hoped to increase residents’ awareness of indigenous history and culture.
“Indigenous people caused scars on trees by removing bark for various purposes,” he said.
“The scars, which vary in size, expose the sapwood on the trunk or branch of a tree. Aboriginal people removed bark from trees to make canoes, containers and shields and to build temporary shelters.”
The plaque will be unveiled at 3pm on June 3.
Fugitive still at large
Melton police continue their search for James Daniel Simpson, 26, who is wanted for alleged kidnappings and assaults.
A warrant for his arrest was issued on April 13.
Detective Sergeant Danny Travaglini urged anyone who knew Simpson’s whereabouts to call triple-0.
Cars damaged by rocks
Police are seeking information after rocks were thrown at 14 cars parked in Castlemaine Way, Caroline Springs, on May 11.
The rocks were stolen from nearby gardens. Many windscreens were damaged.
Burglars target street
Laptops and jewellery were among items taken during a series of daytime burglaries in Eloura Circuit, Taylors Hill.
The thefts took place on May 15.
A maroon-coloured early ’90s Holden Commodore was seen in the area at the time.
Attempted mugging
Two men are being sought for questioning about an attempted armed robbery in Melton South.
Police said the pair threatened a man with a knife on Grace Street about 7pm on May 14.
The victim escaped after punching one of the men.
