SOUTH Gisborne Red prevailed in an intra-club battle to claim the Macedon Ranges Tennis Association section 1 premiership at the weekend.
Red beat clubmate South Gisborne Black 5-54 to 4-40 with a dominant women’s team to thank for opening up the contest.
Black swept all three men’s sets for eight games advantage, with Michael Lehane, Murray Anderson and Jason Fitzpatrick bettering Red’s James Cagliarini, Nathan Bain and John Tirpkos.
But the Red women countered by sweeping the three women’s sets. Sandra Tirpkos, Gaye Glanvil and Amanda Forbes bettered Black’s Deb Dare, Karlee Rennes and Jessica Forbes.
Red claimed two of the three mixed sets, with the Bain-Glanvil and John Tirpkos-Forbes partnerships adding six more games to the final margin. In section 2, Kurunjang Park 5-50 defeated Gisborne Red 4-48, while in section 3 Mt Carmel Red 6-49 defeated Gisborne 3-45.
