SKYE Hancock says she could have easily lost a friend to dangerous driving.
A friend of the Melton teenager crashed while trying to fix the stereo and driving at a high speed but escaped with his life.
The incident still shook the driver and his group of friends, which is why Skye, 17, is taking part in the Melton ‘road safety ambassador program’.
She will attend a community road safety forum on April 18.
“Talking about how many accidents have happened and how is really important,” Skye says.
“There’s numbers of how many people have died, but what about people who have beenseriously injured who suffer every day with their injuries from car accidents?
“If others go and listen to those stories, hopefully we can make a difference.”
Melton mayor Justin Mammarella says the event is aimed at enhancing people’s understanding of road trauma.
“Too many accidents happen on our roads,” he said.
The forum will provide information on road rules, road safety and tips to help avoid a collision.
Speakers will include chief magistrate and former coroner Noreen Toohey, Christine Harrison from Road Trauma Support Services, and Melton highway patrol officers.
The forum is from 7pm at Melton Community Hall.
