VSDCA: Melton takes two to tango

MELTON’S bowlers never gave Kew a chance as the Lions posted a dominant eight-wicket win in the North West 2nd XI grand final at Victoria Park.

Kew was rolled for just 78 in 52.3 overs before Melton knocked off the runs with two wickets down, going on to finish 2-173.

Paul Halfhide (3-30) and Tom Cullum (2-23) opened the bowling for Melton before Jarrod Thompson claimed innings-best figures of 3-5 off 12.3 overs.

Tristan Francis (30) and Braedan Kight (23) fell within nine runs of each other to leave Melton 2-53, but Stuart Wilson (60 not out) and Nicholas Gale (54) were unseparated in taking Melton to victory.

In North West 3rd XI, Melton overcame a disastrous start with the bat against Brunswick to win by 75 runs.

Reeling at 3-11, Melton lost regular wickets on the way to being 9-108 batting first.

But Hayden Castle’s unbeaten 59 and No.11 Cobi Davies (18) put on 68 runs in a last-wicket stand that gave Melton’s bowlers a healthy target.

Ben Notman took 5-23 off 22 overs and Matthew Stead 3-6 as Brunswick was all out 101 in reply.

In North West 4th XI, Melton made a decent fist of chasing a big Plenty Valley score but fell 73 runs short.

David Wallace hit 120 to lead Plenty Valley to 7-312 off 80 overs, with David Thompson (3-96) and Premith Unnikrishnan (2-50) the only multiple wicket-takers for Melton.

The Lions had eight batsmen make double figures, but only Ashley Rundell (59) could get past 50 in the chase.

Melton was all out 239 in reply.
