BACCHUS Marsh’s historic Blacksmith’s Cottage and Forge was a hive of activity last Wednesday as Bacchus Marsh Primary School pupils inspected historical artefacts to write a report on.
The project is part of the National Trust’s Heritage Festival (April 14-29), which the cottage will celebrate on April 21-22.
Grade 6 pupil Kiahn (pictured with volunteer Jean Lycette) took great interest in a butter churner.
Others were more impressed by old plough shares that Ned Kelly used to make his armour with.
Cottage spokeswoman Marjorie Goodchild says it’s vital that youngsters develop an interest in history.
“They generally find it quite interesting to see how older generations lived. Some had never seen a traditional teapot before and others were amazed that milk was stored in glass bottles.”
