Apprentice carves a niche

MOWBRAY College student Sasha Dimotrovic (pictured) was lucky enough to start his dream career while still in high school.

While juggling VCE and certificate II in engineering at Victoria University, Sasha, 18, created an engraving machine which has been selected for Melbourne Museum’s Top Designs exhibition.

The exhibition forms part of the VCE ‘season of excellence’ and showcases Victoria’s most exceptional young designers.

The fully functional machine took Sasha six months to create as part of his systems engineering studies.

“It works like an engraver except that it’s connected to a computer. It can be used for engraving pictures, milling, as far as your imagination takes you.”

He says being included in the exhibition was a real honour.

After a successful year of combined study, Sasha was recently accepted into RMIT as a first-year mechanical engineering apprentice.

Top Designs is from March 24-July 15.
