FFV: Cup’s a knockout

THE name may be cumbersome, but the competition was recognisable as the draw was announced last week for Football Federation Victoria’s State Knockout Cup.

Matches will be played this Saturday.

A revival of the old Dockerty Cup, the competition was named the Mirabella Cup last season but has dropped the title after failing to agree to terms with original sponsor Joe Mirabella.

Last year’s prizemoney of $50,000 per season has been maintained; $30,000 goes to the winner.

The original blueprint also included A-League sides Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart joining the competition at the final-eight stage, but the FFA intervened to withdraw Heart and Victory’s participation to protect its proposed national knockout cup slated to start next year.
