Moorabool: Ex-Victorian Crown Lands Department staff in toxin probe

Former Victorian Crown Lands Department staff claim to have been exposed to toxic chemicals, such as cyanide and Agent Orange which were used to kill off weeds and animals from 1965 to 1995.

Employees from Moorabool shire who worked for the former Lands Department have been asked to take part in an independent inquiry into the use of chemicals 24D and 245T.

Written submissions and interviews are being sought until June 12. An inquiry date has not been set.

Australian Workers Union (AWU) spokeswoman Mary McNamara said the union had been in touch with dozens of former employees who said their health had suffered after being exposed to these toxic chemicals.

“Many of our members contacted us with very similar stories,” Ms McNamara said.

“There are common themes across the state regarding the chemicals that were used, the reassurances employees were given by their employers about the safety of using these chemicals, and the illnesses these employees have developed.”

She said the AWU and former staff wanted to know why safety practices were so lax.

“We have questions – every person who has contacted us has questions – and we hope to get answers through this inquiry,” Ms McNamara said.

“We need to hear from as many people as possible so we can get a clear picture.”

She said the number of people affected was still unknown.
