The Melton Lions Club will call on Melton council to increase security after the club’s rooms were broken into three times in less than two months.
Club secretary Val Turner said the recent thefts were the first in the club’s 30-year history.
“The first time they broke in, [the thieves] cut the fence and they took a small six-by-four trailer,” Ms Turner said.
The thieves broke into the club for a third time on Wednesday, May 6, and stole interior security cameras.
Melton police said that based on CCTV footage, it appeared the offender was a young male aged about 15 to 20 and wearing a hooded jumper.
“We’re worried they’ll continue coming back,” Ms Turner said.
The club will meet Melton council this week to talk about opportunities for increased security measures around the Melton South property, which is owned by the council.
Ms Turner said the Lions Club hoped the council would look into erecting a spotlight and a security camera on a nearby pole.
“It’s a bit disheartening, I suppose, when the club’s there to help the community and there are some people in the community [who] think it’s their fair game to steal,” she said.
The club is discussing whether to cut down the trees surrounding the property which Ms Turner said had given the thieves a “fair bit of cover”.
“Melton is such a community-focused place, it’s got such a community heart and then you have a handful of people who think it’s OK to be doing these things.”
