A small tiger snake was spotted at Diggers Rest preschool last month.
A Melton council maternal health nurse advised the council of the snake sighting.
A council spokesperson said there were no children at the site at the time and the kindergarten operator, TRY Children’s Services, was notified.
“The snake was just outside in the grounds,” the spokesperson said.
“We notified the kinder provider to make sure they were vigilant and we also put in a request to maintenance to tidy up the leaves.”
The tiger snake moved from the grounds of “its own accord” and was not harmed.
A TRY Children’s Services spokesperson reassured parents there was nothing to worry about.
“We’re doing normal, due diligence yard checks,” the spokesperson said. “Parents shouldn’t be worried – we’ve got staff who are really diligent so it shouldn’t be an issue.”
Local snake catcher Jake Haarburger said it was unusual, but not rare, for snakes to be sighted in cooler months.
Tiger snakes are venomous.
Mr Haarburger urged anyone who saw one to keep away and call a snake catcher.
