Grants a community lift

The Westwaters community grants initiative is again being activated, with submissions being sought from local not-for-profit and charity organisations.

There’s $100,000 up for grabs as part of the community initiative.

Entertainment complex Westwaters’ sales and marketing director, Belinda Lee, said the grants were about helping as many different community groups as possible.

“We want to be able to support the local community, especially in regards to local youth,” Ms Lee said.

“Being in one of the biggest growth corridors, there’s a big need for services and facilities to support youth. It’s important for us, as a local business and as one of the larger businesses in the community, to do that.”

Ms Lee said the community grants committee was looking for applications that would be beneficial to the whole community.

The grants have been offered since Westwaters opened its doors in 2010. The grants have assisted not-for-profit groups including the Orange Pigeon, which grants special wishes for terminally ill adults.

Orange Pigeon treasurer and volunteer Julie Toll said the Westwaters grant was helpful in funding website upgrades that allowed more people to access information and services.

The group received about $3500 from the 2013 grants allocation.

“We would have had to flip a lot of
sausages to get that amount of money,” Ms Toll said. The group will apply for a grant again this month to assist with more marketing and awareness of the organisation.

Grant applications are being accepted until May 31. Details: www.westwatershotel.com.au/community-grant.
