Study dreams get a lift

Bacchus Marsh College student Joshua Coulson (pictured) hopes to one day study agriculture. He was given help to reach that goal with a VicRoads Indigenous Secondary Scholarship.

The year 10 student was recently awarded the scholarship, which is part of the VicRoads Indigenous Employment Program.

The program provides financial assistance, practical support and aims to increase training and working opportunities for indigenous young people in Victoria.

Joshua will be provided $800 towards his studies this year, a further $1200 next year and $1600 in year 12.

Bacchus Marsh College Koorie support co-ordinator Julie Hamilton said Joshua was proud of his Koorie heritage. She said he was engaged in the school and wider community, and was committed to extracurricular activities. In particular he was a highly valued member of the college’s senior team for the RACV Energy Breakthrough, an annual state event where students build human-powered and hybrid vehicles to race.

“We are all very proud of him,” Ms Hamilton said.

Joshua, too, is proud of his achievement.

“I am very happy and surprised to receive the scholarship as there was only four of these given out across Victoria,” he said.
