Burnside Heights Football Club turns pink this weekend in support of junior football’s biggest backers – footy mums.
In sync with Mother’s Day, the charity sports weekend will raise money for the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).
Club president Justin Peagram said the BCNA was a worthy cause.
“The biggest drive for starting the football club was mums,” Mr Peagram said. “Mums are so important to junior footy; breast cancer is a disease that takes some mums from us.”
During the weekend senior players will don pink socks and juniors will wear pink arm bands. All matches will be played with pink footballs.
“Every one of the players have a mum, sister, girlfriend, wife or people in their lives that can be affected by breast cancer,” Mr Peagram said.
He wants the pink accessories to send a visual message to help raise awareness, and funds, for breast cancer research and treatments.
The club has hosted the pink sports weekend for the past four years and this year aims to raise $3000 for BCNA. Mr Peagram hoped the club’s contribution could help women battling breast cancer by finding a cure.
On Saturday, high tea will be served in the clubrooms from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Tickets are $35 and include nibbles, champagne, tea and coffee, as well as a Pink Lady pin.
