Larissa Davine is proving the naysayers wrong with her entry into Moorabool Shire’s art competition.
The 19-year-old entered a detailed drawing of US screen actor Morgan Freeman into the shire’s art competition, which was part of its National Youth Week festivities.
The artwork was a crowd favourite and Ms Davine won the People’s Choice Award after having her work displayed at the Bacchus Marsh public hall and online through the Moorabool Youth Services Facebook page.
She said Freeman was one of her role models and she found his work as an actor inspiring.
“In Bruce Almighty [in which he plays God], he teaches people to do the right thing, and that anyone can start from nothing and become a something. It doesn’t matter who says you can’t do something, you can if you believe you can.”
Ms Davine took those messages on board and entered the arts competition this year to prove she was capable of arts and drawing after failing her arts subject in school last year.
She said she loved to draw and wanted to prove to the community and herself that her marks were wrong.
“It’s a pretty good feeling,” she said of winning. It was so good to know that there were so many people out there to help me achieve something I wanted to achieve,” she said.
Ms Davine now hopes to go back to school, complete year 12 and continue her work with art. Naturally, her message to others is to always “give it a go”.
