Fashion Revolution Day: Change is wear it’s at

Melton couple Karen and Danny Ellis are preparing to turn the fashion world inside out for the coming Fashion Revolution Day.

The frugal couple, who are behind Melton’s RUDE (Reusers of Unloved Discarded Excess), are keen to put the spotlight on big brands
and are asking the question, who made my clothes?

On April 24’s Fashion Revolution Day, they will challenge global fashion brands to demonstrate commitment to transparency.

The event marks the day, two years ago, when 1133 people were killed and more than 2500 injured in the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory complex in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

“We’re not going to take it any more and just keep buying this crap,” Ms Ellis said. “We’re going to repair and look after what we’ve got.”

This year the couple have put together a video showing how they repaired Mr Ellis’s 15-year-old Wavezone shorts.

They plan to send the video to Wavezone in China and put it on YouTube. Ms Ellis said the video would ask Wavezone bosses if their workers were being paid fairly and treated with respect.

“It just gets the companies starting to be more transparent and accountable to consumers,” she said. The video also demands that these companies manufacture ethically.

“We’re sharing all of this in the hope of inspiring people to be a bit more mindful and a bit more thoughtful when they are
shopping. They can think twice about buying another T-shirt or another pair of jeans and possibly [think about] repairing what they’ve already got or upcycling it into something else they can wear.”

More than 60 countries are taking part in Fashion Revolution Day.
