One of Moorabool council’s biggest road and infrastructure projects has started with the turning of the sod at Halletts Way last week.
Work has begun on the $1.5 million northern extension of Halletts Way, creating a link between Ramsay Crescent and Links Road at Darley.
Council’s infrastructure general manager Phil Jeffrey said the road extension would provide another route to Bacchus Marsh for Darley residents and would help alleviate traffic in Bacchus Marsh.
Mr Jeffrey said it also created opportunities to extend public transport routes further north into Darley once the northern extension was complete.
The extension is expected to open to traffic by September, given winter construction goes well.
Mr Jeffrey said a lot of background work over the past 12 months helped bring the project to fruition.
Moorabool council has put $500,000 toward the road extension with the rest of the funding made up from developers Telford Park and Oupan, and Melbourne Water.
The council is also designing the southern extension of Halletts Way, which will create a western link from Griffith Street to Links Road. If funded, construction is expected to start in 2016.
The overall Western Link Road project also includes east-facing freeway ramps at Halletts Way and a pedestrian bridge.
Council is still waiting for confirmation of a starting date for this stage of the project, which was approved by the previous state government.
