Melton’s focus this month is on women as part of a wider celebration for International Women’s Day.
Melton council and Djerriwarrh Health Services rolled out ‘Making it Happen’ campaign posters throughout March to highlight the achievements and contributions of the city’s women.
Anna Miller, who was featured in the campaign, says it’s important to recognise everyone’s contribution.
“You get up in the morning and go,” she says. “You feel empowered thinking you’ve done what you’ve done, but it’s all a part of life.”
Ms Miller says there is nothing extraordinary about women taking part in day-to-day life and contributing to the fabric of society, but she believes women need to find a stronger voice to speak about everyday topics.
“Girls need more solid role models, people who are going to be great advocates for women.
“Men and women both have roles to play, so we all need to be better role models for young people.”
The Caroline Springs hairdresser opened her first Linear salon six years ago and the second two years ago.
She says it’s important for employers and workplaces to realise the dual role of some women – mothers and employees – and flexibility needs to be shown.
“You can have both; you can be a mum and a worker. But you have to be able to have a good work environment where your team can be flexible.
“Your people need to be open to change and be flexible to change.”
Djerriwarrh Health Services chief executive Bruce Marshall said the Making it Happen campaign was about encouraging effective action to advance and recognise the role of women.
“All around the world, International Women’s Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality,” he said. “The campaign aims to celebrate and recognise the unique contribution of women in the community.”
