Three teens to face court over Brookside College fires

Three teenagers have been charged with setting fire to equipment at their former high school.

The three 18-year-olds, from Caroline Springs and Burnside Heights, were arrested last week following fires at Brookside College in Caroline Springs on Sunday, February 22.

Play equipment and a shade cloth were set alight, causing damage valued at about $50,000.

Police believe the fires were lit for thrills and say the three men took an accelerant to the school with the intention of destroying the playground equipment.

Detective Senior Sergeant Barry Jenks, of the Melton criminal investigation unit, said the equipment was destroyed.

“We don’t believe they intended damaging any other buildings or structures at the school, but it’s an extremely concerning incident and has real potential to cause more damage and injury,” Detective Senior Sergeant Jenks said.

The teenagers have been charged on summons to appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court at a later date.

Police say they are not looking for any other suspects.

Brookside College was contacted by Star Weekly but declined to comment.

Residents are urged to call Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000 if they suspect someone of deliberately or recklessly lighting a fire.
