Kitty cuts at a discount to ease Melton stray cat problem

A western suburbs-based animal rescuer has offered to desex cats at a discounted price for low-income earners.

Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue founder Nathan Miles will extend a helping hand to cat owners to help ease Melton’s stray cat problem.

“We want to promote responsible ownership and the benefits of desexing your pets,” Mr Miles said.

“Desexing will help your cat live a longer and healthier life. [And it] prevents cats from getting some types of cancer.”

Mr Miles said it was important that all cat owners, regardless of financial circumstances, were given the chance to have their pets desexed.

Cat and Kitten Rescue desexed more than 600 cats last year. A desexed cat lives for about 15 years, compared with only three for a non-desexed cat, Mr Miles said.

“Desexing will help your cat live a longer and healthier happier life,” he said.

“[It] reduces a cat’s desire to roam and therefore their risk of being hit by cars or involved in fights.”

Melton pet owners must desex their cats and are only allowed two cats per property.

Feral and domestic cats are banned in Eynesbury to protect wildlife.

To be eligible for the discounted price, owners must present a low-income health-care card to Mr Miles, who can be contacted on 0400 988 931.
