Host an Iced Tea Party to help lymphoedema research

Cool down this summer and join the party to raise funds for lymphoedema research.

The Australasian Lymphology Association is putting on an Iced Tea Party to highlight a condition researchers know very little about.

“With so much more to be learnt about treatment and management, funds for research are crucial in improving the quality of life for people with lymphoedema,” Dr Helen Mackie, Iced Tea Party campaigner, said.

As many as 300,000 Australians are believed to have developed lymphoedema as a result of cancer treatment.

The condition can affect people of all ages and occurs when the lymphatic circulation doesn’t function correctly and causes swelling of the limbs.

Early detection is key to its ongoing management and, while there is no cure, research is ongoing to find better ways to manage the disorder.

Djerriwarrh Health Services’ lymphoedema therapist Cheryl Prendergast said although the disorder wasn’t painful, it was debilitating.

“Lymphoedema is not painful, as such, but it is debilitating.

“Patients have large, swollen, heavy limbs, and it can hinder their ability to walk or get clothing to fit.”

Last year, the campaign raised $35,000 for lymphoedema research.
