Reading is a summer-long adventure in Moorabool

One hundred children and teenagers took part in Moorabool council’s summer reading program, digesting more than 800 books among them.

As summer wraps up, the final chapter of this year’s program closed with a celebration at Bacchus Marsh and Ballan libraries.

The national reading program for preschool, primary and secondary-aged children is now in its fourth year.

Participants are encouraged to read throughout their summer holidays and win prizes along the way. The end-of-program celebrations included handing out participation certificates. Four lucky bookworms also received more major prizes.

Shane Green won the preschool category, Emily Hasse the primary school category, and Catherine Klenkowski the secondary school category.

The major prize winner for the competition was Scarlett Rose McKay, who scored a Nintendo 3DS XL.

That was inspiration enough for young Ada (below) to start thinking of next year’s competition.

Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell says the program inspires a love of reading among young people.

“The program offers a great opportunity for participants to engage with our libraries, discover and develop an understanding and skills related to the theme Adventure, and take part in activities that inspire a love of reading, literature and libraries,” he said.
