Jenny Barrie is passing batons to raise money and celebrate the lives of those diagnosed with cancer.
The Bacchus Marsh resident has been part of the Melton Relay for Life for the past five years and has no plans to stop.
“You don’t necessarily talk about cancer but you know you’re all there for one reason,” Ms Barrie said. “I just really enjoy doing it.”
The event is a chance for communities to get together, recognise and celebrate those who have beaten cancer or are having treatment, as well as the people who care for them.
Teams of 10-15, headed by a team captain, raise funds throughout the year then participate in a relay-style walk, where they challenge themselves to stay on the track overnight.
“I found that it is an emotional event at night time and I think you learn different things as you go along,” Ms Barrie said.
Ms Barrie’s team, VB V8, has already raised about $1400 this year, bringing their five-year total to $12,000.
Ms Barrie’s 91-year-old mum, Margaret, will also be at the relay cheering on her team.
The Melton Relay for Life encourages participants to dress up, pitch a tent and celebrate the life of cancer patients, survivors and carers.
It runs from 4pm on Saturday, February 21 to 10am on Sunday, February 22 at the Tapcorp Park in Melton South.
